You want old school? I'll give you old school! How about a series that is only three years younger than I am. Space Battleship Yamato debuted in Japan in 1974 and it was a huge hit! Five years later, it crossed the Pacific as Starblazers.

I found it in the fall of 1979, and immediately fell for it. It ran for two years, until it was replaced in the fall of 1981 by a sucky substitute.

Quick fact: Derek Wildstar, the lead character in Starblazers, is known as Susumu Kodai in the Japanese version.
